Carroll Baker

Giant, The Big Country, How the West Was Won… Carroll Baker appeared in many films throughout her career, but it’s for one film in particular that she will always be remembered: Elia Kazan’s controversial 1956 Baby Doll, written by Tennessee Williams. In it, Baker played a teenage bride in Mississippi married to a middle-aged cotton gin owner, portrayed by Karl Malden.



Baby Doll brought notoriety to everyone involved because of its frank sexuality, but most of that sexuality came through Baker’s smoldering sexy performance. She was Oscar-nominated for Best Actress.



In the late ‘60’s, Baker and her husband wound up in Italy, where she starred in several Italian thrillers, like Baba Yaga and Paranoia. Only a lead role in Andy Warhol’s Bad, in ’77, brought her back to the States.
